Fuel Ferret ("we", "the app", "the service") is built with privacy in mind. This page explains exactly what data we handle, how, and why. The short version: we don't have user accounts, we don't track you, and we don't sell or share data.
1. What we collect
Fuel Ferret collects the absolute minimum needed to show you nearby fuel prices:
Postcode — only if you type one in. Used to sort stations by distance. Never sent to any server beyond the postcode-to-coordinates lookup (see Section 4).
Geolocation (latitude/longitude) — only if you tap "Use my location" and grant your browser/device permission. Used solely to sort and filter stations by distance.
Favourites — the station IDs you mark as favourites.
Preferences — your active fuel type, retailer filters, and search radius.
2. Where this data is stored
All four items above are stored only in your browser's local storage on your own device. They are never sent to our servers, never associated with an account (we have no accounts), and never shared with anyone. Clearing your browser data, uninstalling the app, or using private browsing mode wipes all of it.
3. What we do NOT collect
No name, email, phone number, or any other identifying information.
No advertising or tracking cookies.
No analytics — we do not run Google Analytics, Mixpanel, or any equivalent service.
No payment information — the app is free.
No device fingerprinting.
4. Third-party services we use
To function, Fuel Ferret makes anonymous network requests to a small number of third-party services. None of them receive any personally identifying information from us:
UK Government Fuel Finder API — the source of all fuel price and station data. Accessed via our own backend; your browser never contacts it directly. We send no information about you.
postcodes.io — converts a typed postcode to coordinates. Your browser sends only the postcode you entered.
OpenStreetMap — provides the map tiles in the Map view. Your browser requests tile images for the map area you're viewing.
Google Fonts — serves the fonts used by the interface. Your browser requests font files; Google's privacy policy applies to that interaction.
Google Maps — only opened if you tap a "Directions" button on a station. At that point you leave Fuel Ferret and Google Maps' own policies apply.
Cloudflare — hosts our backend worker. Cloudflare may log standard request metadata (IP address, user-agent) for abuse prevention, as is standard for any website. We do not access these logs for anything other than diagnosing outages.
5. UK-only access
The service is restricted to users in the United Kingdom (including the Isle of Man and Channel Islands). We determine this from the country code Cloudflare provides for your IP address. We do not store or use the IP address itself.
6. Children
Fuel Ferret is not directed at children under 13. We don't collect data from anyone, so there is no targeted collection of children's data, but the service is intended for adults who refuel vehicles.
7. Security
Because we don't collect or store personal data on our servers, there is nothing to breach on our side. All communication between your device and our backend is over HTTPS.
8. Changes to this policy
If we ever change how data is handled, this page will be updated and the "Last updated" date above will change. Material changes (for example, if we ever introduce analytics) will be reflected here before the change goes live.
